FAQ

Everything people tend to ask about the tools, the coaching and the music. If something is missing, just ask me directly.

What do I need to run your tools?

Ableton Live with Max for Live. Every device here is a Max for Live device, so Live Suite works out of the box — with Standard you need the Max for Live add-on. Live 11 or newer is the safe assumption; anything with tighter requirements says so on its own page.

What is Max for Live?

It is the part of Ableton Live that lets people build their own instruments, effects and sequencers and share them as devices. You do not need to understand any of it to use what I make — you drop the device onto a track like any other, and it behaves like a native one.

How do I install a device?

Unzip the download and drag the .amxd file into Live, or drop it into your User Library so it shows up in the browser for good. There is no installer and nothing to authorise.

"Pay If You Can" — how does that work?

Exactly as it sounds. Some tools have no fixed price, so you decide what it is worth and what you can afford. Paying nothing is a legitimate answer and the device is not crippled if you do. If it earns its place later, you can always come back.

How does checkout work?

Gumroad handles the payment and the
delivery. You are taken there to pay by
card, and the device arrives as a
download link on the confirmation page
and again by email. There is no account
to create and nothing to activate.

Gumroad is the seller of record, so tax
is worked out on their side and your
receipt comes from them. If the email
does not turn up, check spam first, then
tell me and I will send the file across
directly.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If a device is not what you hoped,
email me within 30 days and I will refund
it. No form, no justification needed.
The money goes back the way it came.

If something is broken rather than simply
wrong for you, tell me before you ask for
the refund. I would rather fix it — and a
fix helps everyone else who bought it too.

What am I allowed to do with a tool once I have it?

Buying a tool gets you a personal licence
to use it. Put it on as many of your own
machines as you need — studio desktop,
laptop, the machine you only touch on
tour.

Anything you make with it is yours
outright. Records, scores, sound design,
client work, things you sell — no
clearance, no royalties, no credit
required. I claim nothing over your music
and never will.

What you cannot do is pass the device
itself on: no reselling, sharing,
uploading, or folding it into a pack,
template or sample library you
distribute. If someone you work with
wants one, send them here rather than
sending them the file.

The terms are the same whether you paid
full price or nothing at all. Pay If You
Can sets the price, not the rights.

Do I get updates?

Yes, and they are free. I fix and refine these because I use them in my own sessions, so updates tend to come from something annoying me mid-track rather than from a roadmap.

I have found a bug

Please tell me. The useful version includes your Live version, your operating system, and what you did just before it went wrong. I would rather hear about it than have you quietly stop using the thing.

Do you teach one-on-one?

Yes, two different kinds. Ableton coaching is hands-on in your own projects — workflow, routing, sound design, finishing. The other is creative coaching, a more general approach for people who have the skills but not the output.

Do you take on music work?

Sometimes. Guest mixes, remixes and creative consulting, a small number a year and usually because the brief is interesting.

Are you actually an ape?

No. But I have been making things long enough to have opinions about bananas, and the ape is a better likeness of how I work than a photograph of me at a desk.

Still stuck, or asking something I have not thought of? Write to me — I answer everything myself.
